Vratwale Aloo

I am little late on this but still wanna wish all the Oriya ladies a blessed Savitri.
Savitri Brata or Savitri Amavasya  is a fasting day observed by all Hindu Oriya married women on the Amavasya, the last day of the dark fortnight, in the month of Jyestha.
Married Hindu women, whose husbands are alive, observe it as a vow with great dedication and pray for their husband to have a long life. The word reflects the origin and significance of the Vat-Savitri puja. The fast is dedicated to Savitri and Satyavan; her husband who was destined to die within one year but was brought back to life by her penance. The God of death, Yama, is implored by Savitri when he is about to leave his body. Due to her sheer determination and devotion to her husband, she won him back to life. Soon Satyavan regained his lost kingdom.
That was about the puja in short. Ladies observing the fast don't eat anything cooked and spend the day only on fruits and water. But there are situations when one cannot fast completely like when you are pregnant and then you can eat food cooked without onion and garlic. here is one simple recipe for your fasting days.

Ingredients

  1. Potatoes: 4-5 medium
  2. Pure ghee:1 tablespoon
  3. Cumin seeds: 1/2 teaspoon
  4. Green chilli paste: 1 teaspoon
  5. Red chilli powder :1/2 teaspoon
  6. Raw peanuts: 1/4 cup
  7. salt  to taste
  8. Lemon juice :1 1/2 teaspoons
  9. Fresh coriander leaves: chopped 2 tablespoons

Method
Heat a pressure cooker.
Cut the potatoes into small cubes.
Pour the ghee in the cooker and add cumin seeds.
Add potatoes and mix well.
Add green chilli paste, red chilli powder, peanuts and mix well and sauté for 1-2 minutes.
Add 2 cups water, rock salt and lemon juice and mix.
Cover the cooker and cook under pressure till 2-3 whistles are given out.
Open the lid when the pressure reduces.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with puri and enjoy.
Till then happy blogging
