Aloo Chop

Aloo chop is a very popular tea time snack in Orissa. It is also known aloo bonda or vatata bada in other states of India.
Every household and shop has different  recipe for this.
I am going to share the one that my mom makes and we love it.

Ingredients:

  1. Potato: 2 medium boiled
  2. Onion: 1 medium finely chopped
  3. ginger garlic paste: 1 tsp
  4. Green Chilli: 2 finely chopped
  5. Turmeric Powder: 1 tsp
  6. Peanuts: handful
  7. Coriander leaves: 1tbsp finely chopped
  8. Salt as per taste

Batter:

  1. Besan: 1/2 cup
  2. Turmeric Powder: 1/2 tsp
  3. Red chilli Powder: 1/2tsp
  4. salt as per taste
  5. water: about a cup
  6. Oil for deep frying
Procedure:
Dry roast the peanuts. If using peanuts with skin remove it after roasting.
Peal and mash the boiled potatoes.
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a non stick pan.
Add onion with a pinch of salt and cook till it turns translucent then add ginger, garlic and chopped green chilies and fry until the raw smell goes off (3-4 minutes)
Add the salt and turmeric powder.
Add the mashed potato and mix well.
Once mixed nicely add the peanuts and mix.
Keep aside and let it cool.
After it cools down mix it with hand if required and taste for salt and spices. At this point adjust as per your taste.
Prepare the batter by mixing the besan well with the salt and turmeric powder and chili powder, until no lumps remain.
Make the batter a little thick so that it coats the stuffing nicely.

Heat the oil for deep frying.
Divide the potato mixture into 7-8  balls.
Dip each flattened piece in the batter and deep fry till golden brown.

Yo can change the recipe for the stuffing as per your taste, like adding curry leaves, or skipping peanuts or green chilly. Try whatever suits you and your family.
Serve it hot with ketchup, chutney or midi(murmura) and enjoy with tea or coffee.
Its a great treat for the upcoming cold season:)
